The German high-end audio manufacturer Westend Audio is attracting attention with the unveiling of a prototype for a new turntable that features an innovative drive system. This model is characterized by a unique design that combines a dual motor with an idler drive.

A Fusion of Tradition and Innovation

The idler drive is one of the oldest drive systems, in which the motor’s rotation is transmitted to the platter via a rubber wheel (the idler). It has a strong following for its powerful and energetic sound, but it also has the challenge of being prone to transmitting motor vibrations (rumble).

Westend Audio’s new turntable takes an unprecedented approach by combining this traditional idler drive with a dual-motor drive called the Thiele IDW 01. It is believed that this aims to achieve both the musical dynamism unique to idler drives and the precise and stable rotational control of two motors.

The Westend Audio Philosophy

Westend Audio has a history of pursuing robust construction, advanced technology, and a refined sound in products such as its ‘Monaco Mk2’ tube amplifier. This turntable is expected to be a product that strongly reflects that philosophy.

At this point, only a prototype has been revealed, and details about the product, its release date, and price have not yet been announced. However, this is the emergence of a very interesting product that is likely to make a new mark in the world of analog audio.
