Switzerland’s Piega has announced the Premium 801, the new flagship of the Premium Gen2 loudspeaker series. This model represents a more ambitious direction in the company’s aluminum cabinet series. Priced at £9,200 (per pair), orders are now being accepted.
Inheriting Technology from Coax Series
While positioned below the Coax line, the new model significantly inherits that engineering philosophy, combining Piega’s trademark ribbon technology with a newly developed horn system aimed at achieving higher efficiency, scale, and dynamic range.
Cabinet Formed Under 5,000+ Tons of Pressure
The cabinet itself sets the tone for this speaker. Like the Coax 611, the Premium 801 uses extruded aluminum profiles formed under over 5,000 tons of pressure. According to Piega, this industrial process is nearly unique in the loudspeaker manufacturing industry. The result is a highly rigid, low-resonance enclosure with the clean, tapered silhouette the Premium series is known for.
Internally, Piega has added longitudinal bracing, additional damping layers, and a new wooden reinforcement matrix to suppress unwanted resonances. The midrange driver is housed in its own sealed chamber, while the bass section utilizes a four-woofer reflex system to achieve greater power handling and dynamic authority.
New Ribbon Tweeter Combined with Horn
However, the most significant development sits at the top of the driver array. The Premium 801 is the first in this configuration to adopt the new SSD (Super Symmetric Drive) RM 01-24 ribbon tweeter, which debuted in the smaller Premium 301 and 701 Gen2 models.
With a moving mass of just 0.03 grams, the SSD ribbon is designed to deliver ultra-fast transient response and refined detail resolution. For the first time in the Premium series, Piega has combined this with a specially designed horn. According to the company, the horn nearly doubles the tweeter’s efficiency, lowers the crossover point to approximately 2.7 kHz, and broadens its presence in overall acoustic output.
Piega’s Head of Development, Roger Kessler, states that this combination creates a smoother transition to the midrange:
“The optimized directivity, lower crossover frequency, and recessed position of the SSD tweeter create an exceptionally coherent transition to the midrange, resulting in a particularly seamless and natural soundstage.”
FSD Technology Midrange and Bass Drivers
The midrange itself uses Piega’s FSD (Full Symmetric Drive) technology, with the voice coil symmetrically positioned within the magnetic gap, which the company says ensures linear motion and more relaxed, natural tonality.
The four bass drivers also adopt the FSD principle, achieving a maximum SPL approximately 6.5 dB higher than the Premium 701 Gen2. Piega adds that this gives the Premium 801 the kind of low-frequency authority typically reserved for larger enclosures.
Balance Between Studio Monitor and Dynamic Expression
From a specification standpoint, the new flagship is designed to balance studio monitor neutrality with more expressive, dynamic presentation. The extremely low-mass ribbon promises speed and delicacy, while the horn assembly introduces a hint of pro audio directivity and punch.
Piega claims the result is a sound that approaches the immediacy of live concert performance, with clarity at low levels and composure at high levels. The company also emphasizes horizontal dispersion, suggesting the speaker is tuned to maintain tonal consistency across a wide listening area.
Aluminum Cabinet and Diverse Finish Options
The aluminum cabinet gives the Premium 801 rigidity while also contributing to the speaker’s lifestyle positioning. Piega offers multiple finishes and different base options, from slim round plinths to spike plate systems, enabling this model to integrate into contemporary living spaces more easily than some competing full-range designs.
