UK-based Rega has announced the Nd9, a new flagship MM cartridge in their Nd series. Priced at £695, it is now available for purchase.

New Model Following Nd Series Success

The Nd9 announcement follows the considerable success of the Nd series since its introduction in early 2024. The Nd series has seen strong demand worldwide, with over 35,000 units shipped to date. The Nd9 expands that family, leveraging Rega’s high-end moving coil engineering experience while maintaining the practicality and accessibility of the moving magnet format.

Premium MC-Level Components

At the heart of the Nd9 sits a boron rod cantilever fitted with a fine-line nude diamond stylus. This combination is typically reserved for premium moving coil cartridges, such as Rega’s own Aphelion 2.

According to Rega, the challenge was not the stylus profile itself, but the mechanical interface between the boron cantilever and the Nd magnet assembly. To achieve this, Rega collaborated with specialist watchmakers to create ultra-fine connecting tubes with stepped internal diameters, enabling the two components to be joined with microscope-level precision.

Low-Mass, High-Rigidity Design

The result is a cantilever and stylus system of exceptionally low mass, high rigidity, and rapid responsiveness. The rigidity of boron reduces cantilever deflection during playback, transmitting groove modulation more accurately and significantly reducing distortion. The fine-line diamond profile, with its 3-micron minor radius, is designed to capture subtle changes in the groove wall with greater precision, enhancing detail extraction and extending high-frequency performance.

Handcrafted Manufacturing

According to Rega, the Nd9 is entirely handcrafted, including micro-coil winding. The cartridge features a new generator design with improved pole gap geometry, achieving enhanced linearity and reduced crosstalk, resulting in a wider and more stable soundstage.

The parallel-wound miniature coils are manufactured in-house using 38-micron wire with 1,275 turns per channel, achieving low inductance and low impedance. These factors contribute to improved high-frequency characteristics.

Neodymium N55 Magnet

The Nd9 continues Rega’s use of neodymium N55 magnets, which the company describes as the strongest grade commercially available. While neodymium is common in moving coil designs, Rega’s Nd series marks the first application across a dedicated moving magnet range, providing the generator with stronger driving force than conventional bar magnet MM designs.

Lightweight, High-Rigidity Body

The cartridge body is formed from glass-filled polyphenylene sulfide, an exceptionally rigid and lightweight material injection-molded to tight tolerances. According to Rega, the low-mass housing reduces stress on tonearm bearings and contributes to precise mechanical tracking—an approach inspired by the company’s moving coil models.

Like all Rega cartridges, the pivot pad and stylus assembly feature no mechanical joint between the main body and stylus housing, which the company claims improves stability and tracking accuracy.

Sustainability and Rebuild Scheme

In line with Rega’s sustainability goals, the Nd9 is supplied in fully recyclable packaging. It also participates in Rega’s rebuild scheme, where worn or damaged cartridges can be returned and exchanged for newly rebuilt units with fresh stylus, cantilever, and pivot pad at a discounted price.

Pricing and Availability

The Nd9 is now available priced at £695. Pricing for other regions will be announced shortly. It will also be offered as a factory-fitted option at a discounted price on the multi-award-winning Planar 8 turntable.
