STAX has announced the “SR-009D Electrostatic Earspeaker,” successor to their “SR-009” which has been beloved as the reference for electrostatic earspeakers for many years. Priced at A$5,690, with pricing for other regions to be announced.
A Legend Returns with Modern Updates
The original SR-009 reigned as the benchmark for high-end electrostatic listening for approximately a decade, and demand for its distinctive transparency never ceased. The SR-009D is a direct response to enthusiasts who have been waiting for its revival.
Rather than “reinventing the wheel,” STAX focused on practical improvements while maintaining the original characteristics. The SR-009D has been updated with a series of enhancements for better integration with the current STAX ecosystem. This is also part of the company’s major model refresh following the “SR-007S” update announced earlier this year.
Core Technology Heritage
At the heart of the design, the Multi-Layer-Electrode (MLER) architecture remains, featuring three layers of stainless steel plates bonded at the atomic level. This is technology STAX has cultivated over many years, delivering the “see-through” transparency and ultra-low resonance that made the SR-009 famous. The sound is characterized by an expansive, immersive soundstage with the light yet micro-detailed presentation that electrostatics are known for.
Practical Improvements
The biggest change is the adoption of a detachable, replaceable cable. This has been a long-requested feature from STAX users, offering improved serviceability and future upgrade options. Additional improvements include:

- Genuine leather earpads: High-quality sheepskin earpads adopted
- 10-step headband mechanism: New headband design enables more precise fitting

Driving Requirements
Like other STAX electrostatic earspeakers, the SR-009D requires a dedicated headphone amplifier (energizer) to function properly. Pairing with the company’s SRM-series energizers is recommended.
