South African high-end speaker manufacturer Vivid Audio has revamped its flagship Giya series, announcing the new “Giya Cu” series. The new series’ standout feature is its newly developed drivers with copper caps, a technology adapted from the flagship Moya M1 model.
Drastic Distortion Reduction with Copper Caps
The Giya Cu series consists of four models: G4 Cu, G3 Cu, G2 Cu, and G1S Cu. A common feature across all models is the addition of copper caps to the magnetic circuits of the upper-midrange and lower-midrange drivers.
According to designer Laurence Dickie, these copper caps have the effect of dramatically reducing distortion generated within the magnetic circuit, particularly third-harmonic distortion (by -20dB). This is said to improve midrange transparency and enhance bass clarity.
Refined Enclosure and Acoustic Design
While retaining the iconic organic form of the Giya series, the enclosure design has been further refined. The sandwich composite structure of resin-infused glass and carbon fiber has evolved to be lighter and more rigid. The tapered tubes that handle the back pressure of each driver unit are now housed inside the main enclosure, creating a cleaner appearance.
The crossover has also been newly designed, and detailed improvements have been made, such as Moya-style driver grilles and more accessible rear terminals.
