PCMag | ”The Price Is Just Too High” | ★★★☆☆ |
SoundGuys | ”Like a leather couch for your head, these headphones are comfortable — and pricy.” | 8.3/10 |
WIRED | ”Spirited, convincing, and endlessly listenable sound. Expertly made from indulgent materials.” | 9/10 |
YouTube (SoundGuys) | “They do get a fairly low tamper score which our testing supports it emphasizes bass to an absolutely silly degree.” (01:10–01:16) | N/A |
YouTube (Immersive Sound Tech) | “Px8 are more ‘fun’ to listen to and more comfortable to wear” (comparing to Bathys) | N/A |
Reddit User (r/headphones) | “Compared to the Momentum 4, you can feel the tightness of the bass. It doesn’t hit as hard…but it’s infinitely more refined and punchy” | N/A |
Summary: After surveying approximately 12 major sources, the evaluation ratio is roughly 75% positive, 25% mixed/negative. This evaluation divide tends to split clearly based on what reviewers prioritize. Media focusing on lifestyle and subjective musical experience highly praise the build quality and engaging sound, while media and forums emphasizing objective measurement data and cost-performance are more critical of pricing and ANC performance 19.
Positive evaluations consistently focus on the following points:
- Exceptional Build Quality and Materials: The adoption of nappa leather and die-cast aluminum for luxurious texture is praised in virtually every review 3.
- Clear and Dynamic Sound Quality: Expressions like “exceptional clarity,” “punchy,” and “agile” are frequently used, with the musical enjoyment being highly valued 19.
- Long-term Comfort: The luxurious materials and ergonomic design maintain comfortable fit during extended listening sessions 3.
Negative/Concerns frequently cited include:
- Pricing: The significantly higher price compared to competitors’ flagship models is the biggest point of criticism 21.
- ANC Performance: While noise cancelling is good, it’s widely recognized as not reaching the level of Sony or Bose products in the same class 29.
- Limited App Features: The EQ adjustable only in 2 bands (bass and treble) in the app is often criticized as insufficient 20.
- Durability Concerns: Multiple reports from long-term users about headband leather peeling are a serious concern for a high-priced product 27.
2. Heritage and Technical Excellence: Px8’s Design Philosophy
To view the Px8 merely as the latest wireless headphone would be superficial. Its design philosophy is deeply rooted in the acoustic philosophy and technical heritage that Bowers & Wilkins has cultivated for nearly 60 years.
The Pursuit of “True Sound”: Historical Background
The Bowers & Wilkins story begins with founder John Bowers’ obsession. He dreamed of creating the “perfect speaker” that would convey recorded sound exactly like live performance, without compromising the artist’s intent 2. This philosophy is symbolized by his comparison of speakers to “a perfectly polished pane of glass” 37. This ideal led to the 800 Series becoming the studio monitor standard, the adoption of Kevlar cones, and the introduction of advanced technologies like computer modeling and laser interferometry in the 1970s, forming the brand’s DNA 38. The Px8 is the legitimate successor carrying this long history of acoustic exploration into modern portable form.
Core Technology: Carbon Cone Drivers
The heart of the Px8 and its biggest technical differentiator determining sound quality is the newly developed 40mm carbon cone drivers 3. This represents a major evolution from the bio-cellulose (paper) drivers used in the lower-tier Px7 S2e 12. Carbon fiber, while lightweight, possesses extremely high rigidity, allowing the drivers to respond faster and more accurately to audio signals. As the manufacturer claims, this dramatically reduces distortion from break-up modes, improving sound transparency and resolution 3.
Furthermore, these drivers are precisely angled toward the user’s ears 3. This design optimizes the path sound takes to reach the ears, achieving more natural and expansive stereo imaging.
Form and Function in Luxury: Materials and Ergonomics
Another element that sets the Px8 apart from competitors is its material selection. The headband and ear pads use nappa leather found in luxury car interiors, the arm structure uses die-cast aluminum, and details feature diamond-cut metal parts 3. This contrasts with the Sony WH-1000XM5’s functionality-focused plastic-dominant structure 30, clearly positioning the Px8 not just as audio equipment, but as a luxury item that provides ownership satisfaction.
However, this “luxury craftsmanship” narrative has undeniable contradictions. Multiple long-term users report headband nappa leather peeling from adhesive joints 27. This is a serious flaw that undermines trust in the premium feel and long-term value the product claims.

3. Objective Data Reveals Acoustic Characteristics
Before discussing subjective listening experiences, let’s objectively analyze the Px8’s acoustic characteristics based on third-party measurement data. This allows us to understand the fundamentals of its sound signature.
Frequency Response Analysis
Looking at frequency response graphs published by measurement organizations like headphones.com and SoundGuys, the Px8’s tuning shows clear characteristics 24. These characteristics include heavily boosted low frequencies from sub-bass to mid-bass, relatively flat and neutral mid-range, and several peaks in the high frequencies, creating a curve close to a typical V-shape. This powerful low-frequency boost provides the acoustic basis for some reviews describing it as “boomy” or “dark” 24.
The Paradox of Measurement vs. Perception
Here lies the most interesting paradox in evaluating the Px8. On measurement data, it appears to have excessively emphasized bass, far from reference sound. However, many professional reviewers and users evaluate that bass as “tight,” “agile,” and “refined,” not feeling it as mere “boomy bass” 19.
This discrepancy likely stems from driver performance. The Px8’s carbon cone drivers achieve excellent transient response and low distortion due to their high rigidity and lightness 3. While frequency response graphs show significant bass “quantity,” the sound’s attack and decay are fast with high resolution. This excellent bass “quality” is perceived auditorily as “powerful, pleasant punch” rather than “slow, unclear resonance.”
This is likely the result of intentional tuning by Bowers & Wilkins. Rather than pursuing strict neutrality like studio monitors (such as adherence to Harman target curves), they designed a sound signature to make music more enjoyable and emotionally rich. This is a clear strategic choice targeting luxury market users who prioritize musical experience over analytical purists.
ANC’s Impact on Sound
An important point noted by many users and reviews is that the Px8 clearly enhances bass when Active Noise Cancelling (ANC) is turned on 21. This clearly contradicts Bowers & Wilkins’ official claim of “music-preserving” noise cancelling technology 3. This discrepancy between marketing messages and actual performance is an undeniable point in product evaluation.
Performance in Silence: Noise Cancelling Measurement Data Analysis
The Px8’s ANC performance has been much debated considering its price point and positioning. Measurement data from specialist organizations like SoundGuys provides valuable insights for objective evaluation in comparison with competitors 22.
Detailed analysis of measurement graphs reveals clear differences between the Px8’s noise cancelling strategy and class leaders like Sony WH-1000XM5 and Bose QuietComfort Ultra.
- Low Frequency Range (~300Hz): This is ANC’s main battlefield, where the Px8 demonstrates capable performance against persistent low-frequency noise like aircraft engines and train sounds. Around 100Hz, it shows maximum noise reduction of about 30dB 22. However, comparison with competitors reveals weaknesses. Below 100Hz in the sub-bass region, the Px8’s attenuation performance drops sharply 22. In contrast, Sony WH-1000XM5 and especially Bose QuietComfort Ultra maintain more stable high attenuation performance even in this lowest frequency band, showing clear advantages in suppressing earth-rumbling ultra-low frequency noise 58.
- Mid Frequency Range (300Hz~2kHz): In this band containing human voices and typical office noise, the Px8’s performance is very competitive. Measurement data shows its noise attenuation capability reaches levels comparable to Sony WH-1000XM5 and doesn’t fall far behind Bose 57. This demonstrates that the Px8 is effective against not just low-frequency noise but a broader range of environmental sounds.
- High Frequency Range (2kHz+): In this band, physical isolation by ear cups (passive isolation) dominates over active cancelling. The Px8 achieves excellent isolation, effectively blocking sharp high-frequency sounds through nappa leather ear pads that seal well around ears 22.
In conclusion, the Px8’s ANC reflects intentional tuning that strongly embodies Bowers & Wilkins’ philosophy of “not compromising musicality” 3. In pursuit of absolute silence, it concedes a step to Sony and Bose particularly in the sub-bass region below 100Hz. However, it performs competitively against mid-range noise and provides more than sufficient silence in many daily situations. This represents a design philosophy positioning ANC as an auxiliary function for high sound quality, minimizing impact on audio quality, and is a key element defining the Px8’s character.
4. Sound Portrait: Listening Impressions
Moving from objective data analysis to the subjective listening world, we create a three-dimensional portrait of the sound the Px8 produces by combining quotes from trusted reviews with genre-specific listening impressions.
Reviewer / Media | Quote Extract (Translation + Original) |
---|---|
What Hi-Fi? | ”Thumping out bass with enthusiasm. It is a taut and controlled sound that is packed with excitement” |
Head-Fi User (via Reddit) “jthomp72" | "The momentum 4’s bass is like a sluggers uppercut, weighty but no form, and the Px8 is like a heavy jab from Ali, agile and precise.” |
Resolve (headphones.com) | “For me personally, the PX8’s tuning is very strange sounding, as it has this boomy kind of bass presence on the low end, and a mid treble resonance on the high end.” |
RecordingNow.com | ”Excellent timbre for this class…most definitely Jazz, which I think no headphone touches the Px8 on.” |
Genre-Specific Performance Analysis
- Classical & Jazz: The Px8 demonstrates its true value most in these genres. The exceptional detail reproduction, instrument separation, and realistic timbre brought by carbon cone drivers beautifully render complex orchestral passages and subtle nuances of acoustic instruments 27. Particularly, its somewhat warm and rich character pairs excellently with jazz, conveying the breath of saxophones and resonance of wooden bass vividly.
- EDM, Rock & Pop: In these genres, the Px8’s powerful, punchy bass draws listeners into the musical vortex. The sound is dynamic and energetic, making rhythm-keeping enjoyable 19. However, this is also where the headphone’s characteristics emerge as weaknesses. As noted in many reviews, the Px8 tends to lose energy and brilliance at lower volumes 19. Additionally, with modern tracks that over-boost bass, some listeners may find the low end too dominant 49.
Defining B&W House Sound
Synthesizing these analyses, the Px8’s sound signature defines what could be called the modern Bowers & Wilkins “house sound.” It’s not strict neutrality, but intentionally crafted musical sound. Clear, detailed, and dynamic while possessing rich, controlled lows and smooth, extended highs. It prioritizes emotional impact from music over analytical sterility. This is the Px8’s sound portrait.
5. Value Scales: Px8 Comprehensive Evaluation
Based on the analysis above, we score the Px8 on multiple evaluation axes and make a comprehensive value judgment.
Evaluation Axis | Score (5-point scale) | Commentary |
---|---|---|
Technical Performance | ★★★★☆ | Carbon cone drivers and DSP are top-class, achieving exceptional clarity and low distortion. ANC is effective but not class-leading, and EQ functionality limitations prevent perfect rating. |
Musical Appeal | ★★★★★ | Sound signature is highly attractive, dynamic and enjoyable. Particularly for acoustic genres and medium-to-high volume listening, the immersion and excitement are exceptional. This is the Px8’s greatest strength. |
Build Quality | ★★★★☆ | Materials (nappa leather, aluminum) are premium with instant satisfaction being class-best. However, multiple user reports of headband peeling issues raise serious concerns about long-term durability, preventing perfect rating 27. |
Price-to-Value | ★★☆☆☆ | The $699 MSRP cannot be considered high value compared to competitors offering superior ANC and features at nearly half the price. Its value depends heavily on subjective elements like material luxury and unique sound signature. |
Future-Proofing / Repairability | ★★☆☆☆ | Firmware updates are possible, but basic hardware characteristics won’t change. Reported adhesive issues and the difficulty of component replacement common to modern wireless headphones suggest low long-term repairability for an expensive product. |
Bias Check: Balance of Positive and Negative Elements
- Positive Elements
- Material and Aesthetic Excellence: Unmatched luxurious texture and design 3.
- Sound Clarity and Agility: Exceptional detail and punchy, controlled bass 19.
- Comfort: Excellent fit that doesn’t fatigue during long listening sessions 3.
- Physical Buttons: Reliable, intuitive operation preferred by many users over touch controls 16.
- Negative Elements
- High Pricing: Significantly more expensive than top-tier competitors 21.
- Mediocre ANC Performance: Good but not reaching Sony or Bose’s highest levels 29.
- Basic EQ: App’s 2-band EQ insufficient for detailed sound adjustment 20.
- Low Volume Performance: Energy and brilliance lost at low volumes 19.
- Durability Questions: Multiple reports of headband leather peeling cast shadows on long-term reliability 27.
6. Bird’s Eye View: Px8’s Raison d’être in the Premium Market
The Px8 is a strategic product for Bowers & Wilkins to create and dominate a new subcategory in the wireless headphone market: “Luxury Hi-Fi.” Its design doesn’t aim to compete on the same field (features, ANC performance) as Sony and Bose. Making a completely different value proposition is precisely the Px8’s raison d’être.
The premium ANC market under $400 is saturated by the duopoly of Sony (WH-1000XM5) and Bose (QuietComfort Ultra) 30. They compete for superiority in ANC silence, multipoint connection, and advanced software features. For an acoustics-focused company like B&W to challenge this feature checklist competition head-on wouldn’t be wise.
So B&W’s strategy was to elevate the Px8 to an even higher price point of $699. This shifted the value proposition axis from “technical features” to “tangible luxury and acoustic personality.” What they’re selling isn’t just electronic equipment, but “experience” itself that provides ownership joy and status like luxury watches or handbags.
Evidence of this is in marketing focused on materials like nappa leather and aluminum 3, McLaren collaborations 7, and the “True Sound” brand tradition 2. In this strategy, technical trade-offs like non-best ANC performance or simple EQ are acceptable. The target customers prioritize the feel of leather when held and emotionally stirring bass punch when listening to music over absolute silence or 10-band EQ. The Px8 is a masterfully crafted product for consumers who have “graduated” from mass-market flagships and seek higher prestige, superior materials, and more individualistic, audiophile-leaning sound (even at some sacrifice of functional convenience). Its true competition isn’t Sony XM5 but Focal Bathys 29 and Mark Levinson No. 5909 51.

However, even within this “Luxury Hi-Fi” tier, there exists an even more elite presence. The Danish powerhouse Bang & Olufsen’s Beoplay H100 reigns at the summit of this market with a price point nearly three times that of the Px8 59. In numerous comparison reviews, the H100 is evaluated as surpassing the Px8 with its more expansive soundstage, superior build quality, and powerful noise cancelling performance 60. Conversely, there are voices supporting the Px8’s distinctive mid-range richness and “warm” tonal character, offering a unique musical experience different from the H100’s more analytical sound 48. This presence clearly demonstrates that while the Px8 serves as an entry point to the luxury market, it is not the absolute pinnacle, but rather the result of pursuing a specific acoustic aesthetic.

7. Conclusion: For Whom Are These Headphones?
- Recommended For
- Aesthetically-minded Audiophiles: Listeners who value build quality, premium materials, and design as much as sound quality. Those who seek satisfaction from touch and ownership feeling as well as sound 20.
- Hi-Res Streaming Users: Those using services like Tidal or Qobuz who can maximize the aptX Adaptive codec and driver’s high resolution 3.
- “B&W Sound” Fans: Those who prefer dynamic, musical, somewhat warm sound signatures with powerful, controlled bass over strict neutrality 48.
- Should Avoid
- ANC Performance Prioritizers: Those for whom blocking external noise is the top priority for commuting, frequent flights, or office use. Sony and Bose remain unshakeable kings in this field 29.
- EQ Adjustment Seekers: Users who want detailed sound signature control will be frustrated by the basic 2-band EQ 20.
- Cost-Performance Focused: From a pure functionality perspective, the performance difference with headphones $300+ cheaper is hard to justify the price difference 21.
- Low Volume Listeners: This headphone’s appeal significantly diminishes at low volumes, making it unsuitable for background listening in quiet environments 19.
- Future Updates/Mod Possibilities
- Firmware updates may improve DSP, ANC algorithms, and app functionality. However, fundamental sound signature and reported durability issues stem from hardware and are unlikely to change. Due to integrated sealed design, modification possibilities are virtually nil.
Overall Rating: ★★★★☆
The Bowers & Wilkins Px8 is an outstanding product in the niche “Luxury Hi-Fi” territory it carved out. It’s a masterpiece of design and musicality. However, its excessive pricing, questions about long-term durability, and functional compromises like ANC indicate it’s not recommendable for everyone. Therefore, I deduct one star from perfect rating. This is a brilliant but flawed luxury audio gem.
